Coping after a crisis

Personal

While a crisis, such as a terrorist attack, may last only a matter of minutes, the psychological impact can last for months, or even years in the case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Besides the effects of trauma, psychological impacts can also include loss of trust within the community and, ultimately, disintegration of social cohesion. Knowing how to cope after an incident can help us bounce back quicker and build resilience against future attacks.

People react to crisis situations differently - this also depends on the scale and severity of the attack and individual differences. Some people may show symptoms, while others may not. It is important to recognise the symptoms in yourself or others should they arise.

Business

Terrorist attacks can have affect businesses and organisations by disrupting access and supply chains, for example. Building resilience is crucial to help businesses prepare for and get back on their feet after an attack. It will also restore employees' productivity and ensure their well-being.
